When Shailene Woodley's scenes as Mary Jane Watson were unceremoniously cut from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 last summer, to "streamline the story," there seemed to be a chance the actress could return for the third installment of the Sony franchise.

But now that Woodley is a rising star in her own right, headlining Summit Entertainment's upcoming sci-fi adventure Divergent and its sequels, it looks like director Marc Webb will be searching for another actress to play MJ.

"I don't know anything, but seeing as how they picked up the next two Divergent films, I don't know how I would keep my sanity with two big action films in one year," Woodley told MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival. "But anything can happen, so ..."

At the time her four scenes were chopped from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the scuttlebutt was that her role would be recast. However, Webb appeared to leave the door open to Woodley's return when he explained, "I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship. Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her.”

Opening May 4, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, Paul Giamatti and Sally Field. Divergent opens March 21.
