CSI Investigates Murder at the Comic Con, Covers Revealed

Official Press Release

San Diego, CA (June 1, 2006)-Comics gossip columnist Rich Johnston has bedeviled the industry for years now. Often breaking stories before publishers are ready to announce them, Johnston has annoyed, entertained, amused and enraged many a comic publisher, editor, and creator. And a columnist who evokes such passionate responses from creators is bound to have his share of enemies, too. So when Gil Grissom and his CSI team are called in to investigate Johnston’s apparent murder at a Las Vegas comic convention, the suspect list only grows and grows.

The world of CSI, the top-rated CBS drama, crosses over into the world of comics like it never has before. Beginning in August, IDW Publishing, home to seven previous CSI stories, presents CSI: DYING IN THE GUTTERS #1, a five-part tale that looks at the murder of real-life columnist Johnston.

Joining the police line-up in this story is a veritable who’s who of comics creators: among them, Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada, Tim Bradstreet, Ed Brubaker, Peter David, Chuck Dixon, Phil Jimenez, Robert Kirkman, Adam Kubert, Andy Kubert, Jim Mahfood, Joe Quesada, George Perez, Greg Rucka, Gail Simone, Beau Smith, J. Michael Straczynski, Marc Silvestri, Ben Templesmith, Ashley Wood, and even Stan “The Man” Lee!

“With ‘Dying in the Gutters,’ we’re looking to offer up a story that not only gives fans of the CSI show a clever murder investigation, but also provides something more for fans of comics in general,” said IDW’s Publisher/Editor-in-Chief/Suspect Chris Ryall. “This story would never work without so many great creators willing to appear in the book and let us play with their public personas a bit, so it’s a testament to them that this is happening at all. And to Rich, of course, who was quite gracious in letting us do to him what so many others have wanted to do-kill him off.”

The series will also offer up some interesting variant flip-book cover images of some suspects, too-Peter David’s FALLEN ANGEL cohort J.K. Woodward has provided a PAD-centric image, and artists Ben Templesmith and Jim Mahfood have provided self-portrait images as well, with more to come.

CSI: Dying in the Gutters (Diamond Order Code JUN06 3181) #1, the first issue of a five-issue miniseries, debuts in August 2006. A special “wanted” poster will be sent to retailers through Diamond Dateline on June 7, and an ashcan edition featuring 11 pages of story, will be sent through Diamond Dateline on June 21. A five-page preview of issue 1 will also appear in IDW’s June comics. For more information, visit IDW’s Dying in the Gutters page here: http://idwpublishing.com/dyinggut.shtml
