CSBG Advent Calendar – A Super Christmas, Day 12

Nick Perks drew this Santa/Superman piece. So how this works is that every day until Christmas Eve, you can click on the current day’s Advent Calendar post and it’ll have a story in it that is part of my countdown of the 24 Greatest Superman Christmas Comics ever told! And I’ll add links to the previous days in each new installment.

Here’s Day 1, #24 on the countdown.

Here’s Day 2, #23 on the countdown.

Here’s Day 3, #22 on the countdown

Here’s Day 4, #21 on the countdown

Here’s Day 5, #20 on the countdown

Here’s Day 6, #19 on the countdown

Here’s Day 7, #18 on the countdown

Here’s Day 8, #17 on the countdown

Here’s Day 9, #16 on the countdown

Here’s Day 10, #15 on the countdown

Here’s Day 11, #14 on the countdown

And now for Day 12, #13 on the countdown is…

“World’s Finest Christmas,” from “DCU Holiday Bash III” by Karl Kesel, Dave Taylor and Klaus Janson.

Interestingly, this short story was likely the inspiration for Kesel and Taylor doing a whole year‘s worth of Batman/Superman team-ups in their “Worlds Finest” maxi-series, which detailed the history of the Batman/Superman team-up throughout the history of the Post-Crisis DC Universe.

Here, though, it’s a story with Batman and Superman showing up to fight a robot designed by a brilliant toy inventor who saw his design turned evil because he tried something modern and his old mentor, Toyman, felt that doing so betrayed his ideals. So the robot destroyed this man’s home right before Christmas. Batman and Superman stopped the initial threat, but Superman’s all, “We have to help this family” and Batman responds, “They’re alive. That’s all that they can expect. You can do something if you’d like, but I’m out of here.”

So Superman stayed and rebuilt the family’s home, only for Superman to learn that Batman has his own approach…

Clever, well told resolution. This “alternate approach” idea would form the basis of another story on this list, albeit a more offbeat take on this idea. You’ll see it later this month!
