It may be one of the more talked about comic movies of the next year for events both on and off the screen, and Universal and DreamWorks’ July 29, 2011 “Cowboys & Aliens” is gearing up for both possibilities this week.
The PR machine for the big budget actioner directed by “Iron Man’s” Jon Favreau and starring Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Sam Rockwell and Olivia Wilde is already underway. Yahoo! Movies just debuted the first full poster for the film along with an early one-sheet which can be read here.
Meanwhile, the Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog has word of the growing legal battle over who will be credited with the story for the movie. The studios support full writing credit go to Damon Lindelof, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman who penned the most recent draft of the story based on the Platinum Studios 2006 graphic novel (credited as being created by Platinum CEO Scott Rosenberg and written by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley). However, as many as eight screenwriters were at work on developing a screenplay for “Cowboys & Aliens” over the years on drafts that were legally connected to what became the comic project. The fight could shape up, in THR’s words, “for an especially rancorous arbitration, highlighting the challenges of assigning lucrative credits on studio franchises that spend years in development.”
Whatever the legal situation may turn to be, stay tuned to CBR and Spinoff Online for more “Cowboys & Aliens” news as it develops.
