It's always awesome when a cosplayer nails the look of their chosen character, but it's arguably even better when said cosplayer teams up with a significant other to deliver a double-whammy of comic book costume goodness. Yes, we're talking about couple cosplays, a concept that --when done right -- is one of the best things to come out of the pop culture-based community. Considering that Marvel, DC and other comic book publishers have been around for decades, and have subsequently introduced hundreds of different characters throughout their respective runs, there's plenty of pairs to chose from too.

Often real-life couples can dress up as figures who have been romantically connected in their fictional worlds, whether you want to channel a villainous pair such as Harley Quinn and The Joker or lasting lovers like Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. On the flip-side, there's also the option of cosplaying as sworn enemies too, with some couples imitating The Walking Dead's Negan and Glenn or Superman and Lex Luthor. Or, you could simply fancy dress as friends like Black Widow and Captain America. With all of those potential pair-ups in mind, CBR offers up 16 of the best couple cosplays we've ever seen.

16 CLASSIC JOKER AND HARLEY QUINN

Despite the fact that it looks exactly like it, the picture above isn't actually Alex Ross's iconic artwork "Tango with Evil" featuring DC Comics characters The Joker and Harley Quinn. Instead, it's a real-life tribute created by the appropriately named cosplayer Harley's Joker (aka Anthony Misiano) and his partner Alyssa King (Joker's Harley).

Unlike many cosplayers, Misiano imitates The Joker almost exclusively and it's evident that his years of interpreting that same character has allowed him to perfect that villainous grin. It's hard to imagine anyone looking as much like the recognizable baddie as him. King, on the other hand, dabbles with other characters occasionally. She has previously cosplayed as Zuko from the Nickelodeon series Avatar: The Last Airbender, Teen Titans' Raven and Jessica Rabbit.

15 MERA AND AQUAMAN

Roxane Pots and boyfriend Marius recently fancy dressed as Mera and Aquaman and boy, did they great! The pair's looks were so accomplished in fact that they won the cosplay contest at Comic Con Amsterdam in September 2017. In stunning images taken by photographer Rob Jaspers, fans can see the attention Pots paid to the details of both hers and her boyfriend's costume. We can only imagine how long it took to handcraft that armor, which was made out of foam, leather and acrylic paint, according to Pots' Instagram page.

Mera isn't the only comic book character Pots has cosplayed as either. In the past, she's donned the costumes of Harley Quinn, Catwoman, Wonder Woman and even Charlize Theron's Lorraine Broughton from the spy thriller Atomic Blonde.

14 DOMINO AND WOLVERINE

Domino cosplayer Joey might have merely bumped into Wolverine look-a-like Jim Logan at New York Comic-Con in 2011 but the pair's costumes -- and poses -- are so spot-on, it's almost as if they planned their looks beforehand. In a photograph taken by Jean Paul deGuzman, the pals channel their characters with Logan showing off his "adamantium" claws and boasting a gruff expression and Joey holding up plastic guns with a seemingly seductive smirk.(Within the Marvel comics, Domino and Wolverine's relationship tends to purely physical, so there's no wonder why Joey went for that kind of vibe).

While -- unsurprisingly, given his name -- Logan almost always cosplays as Wolverine, Joey likes to shake things up. She previously fancy dressed as fellow mutants Jean Grey and Rogue, Resident Evil's Jill Valentine, Batgirl, Emily from Tim Burton's Corpse Bride and Watchmen's Silk Spectre.

13 CAPTAIN AMERICA AND BLACK WIDOW

Even without their costumes, cosplayers and real-life buddies Clef and Han Jones look so similar to Chris Evans' Captain America and Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow. But in reality, it's their outfits that really make them look the part! Their awesome costumes are highlighted in the atmospheric photo above, which was snapped by Shashin Kaihi at Paris Comics Expo, way back in November 2014. Particularly Clef's hand-made catsuit and boots!

Within the cosplay community, Clef is known for nailing the Natasha Romanoff look but the female Avenger is definitely not the only character she's ever imitated. Formerly, the Disney fan has fancy dressed as Cinderella, Tiger Lily from Pan, Inside Out's Joy, Anna from Frozen and everyone's favorite pixie Tinkerbell. Jones, meanwhile, is a professional singer, dancer and actor.

12 RAVEN AND BEAST BOY

Unlike most comic book cosplayers, who tend to get their inspiration from movies nowadays, friends Fernanda Souza and Nate Cos decided to fancy dress as Raven and Beast Boy from the DC Comics-inspired animated series Teen Titans. Their results were certainly impressive too as the pair not only painted their entire bodies purple and green, they also threw on some wigs too, in keeping with the characters they were impersonating. If Souza's Facebook page is anything to go by though, all credit goes to artist Gabriel Picolo for designing their looks.

In a photoshoot by Paula Baio, the pair took their roles seriously, as they mimed doing all kinds of teenage-type things including taking selfies, smooching and teasing each other. We particularly love Nate's cute fake fang that pokes out from under his bottom lip...it makes him look just like the cartoon!

11 ROGUE AND GAMBIT

When you're a real-life couple like cosplayers Jessica and Luc, then it makes sense to select two characters that have actually been an item in their own fictional world. So it's understandable then that they chose X-Men's Rogue and Gambit to fancy dress as for Orlando's MegaCon in May 2017. We love that they replicated the mutants looks from the classic comics, rather than the films, as the outfits are undeniably more iconic.

Jessica wore a green and yellow bodysuit and completed the ensemble with a belt and 'X' buckle while Luc donned Gambit's bright pink breastplate, brown trench coat and wild hair. Other looks that Jessica likes to work include Captain Marvel, Overwatch's Tracer, Harley Quinn, Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas and our personal favorite, a genderswapped Austin Powers. Luc, on the other hand, has cosplayed as Doctor Who, Nightwing, Arsenal and several versions of Spider-Man.

10 NEGAN AND GLENN

We love that Luigi Shiraga and his husband Michael not only looked like The Walking Dead's Negan and Glenn when they attended Stan Lee's Los Angeles Comic Con in 2016, they embodied the characters completely. If only for a snapshot, at least! In photos taken by Jon York, the pair can be seen reenacting that infamous scene that opened the television drama's seventh season, where Negan brutally beat Glenn with his barbed-wire-baseball bat, Lucille.

Shiraga and Michael regularly attend pop-culture conventions together; often taking their son along too! The Walking Dead's Negan and Glenn appear to be among their most favored cosplay looks ---as when their son attends with them, he can play Carl -- but in the past, they've also fancy dressed as Gambit, Green Lantern and Kyle Rayner, Shazam, Harry Potter characters and even, horror movie icons Freddy and Jason.

9 DEADPOOL AND X-23

We love when comic book lovers think outside the box a little. And that's just what Shawn and his girlfriend Ally Blaze did when they cosplayed as Deadpool and Laura Kinney aka X-23 -- two characters that don't have that much to do with each other within the Marvel Comics. The image of the duo above was taken by NY-based photograph Ronn at Otakon in Washington DC back in August.

Judging by both of their Instagram accounts, one of their all-time favorite superheroes is Nightwing -- something that they bonded over when they started dating in August -- so it's unsurprisingly then that both her and Shawn have cosplayed as Dick Grayson at previous conventions. Other figures that Blaze has impersonated before include Game of Thrones' Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen, Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games and Spider-Gwen and Pokemon's Ash Ketchum. Shawn has cosplayed as Spider-Man and Superman.

8 GREEN ARROW AND BLACK CANARY

As comic book readers and Arrowverse fans know, Laurel Lance (aka Black Canary) and Green Arrow's Oliver Queen are one of DC Comics' most well-known couples. Having first encountering one another in 1963’s Justice League of America #21, the duo embarked on a friendship which eventually -- after a bit of a rocky road -- grew into something more. After a rejected proposal, cheating accusations, a break-up and a resurrection, the pair married in 2007.

Given their long history together, it's no wonder that French cosplayers Patricia and Rodrigues wanted to pay homage to the tumultuous twosome in their own coupled-up cosplay. In woodland shots -- that look like they could have been snapped on Lian Yu itself -- taken by Pictures of Jack, the real-life partners embody their characters as they strike battle-ready poses.

7 ELEKTRA AND DAREDEVIL

Photography that lives up to how great some cosplay costumes, often sees the photographers getting the cosplayers to act like their characters. Fortunately, Draumrkopa and her boyfriend were game to do so when they fancy dressed as Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, and Elektra. The pair took inspiration from the earlier seasons from Daredevil's eponymous Netflix series; with him wearing the black fabric mask and compression shirt get-up that he wore before he donned that dark red suit and Draumrkopa opting for one of Elektra's more basic guises.

By having them pose back-to-back, photographer batoucat perfectly captures the pair's dynamic from the show; a man and a woman who passionately love each other yet often find themselves on the opposite sides of a conflict. Well, that, or they're just in serious ninja mode.

6 SPIDER-MAN AND BLACK CAT

Spider-Man and Black Cat are a popular pair for couples to cosplay as, given that they have been romantically linked within Marvel's comics. While many people imitate the characters, we particular love Erin Moorey and her boyfriend Jasin's take on the characters, as they so closely resemble them in Simba lkaderi's photographs.

"Blackcat I would consider [my] most successful," Moorey recently revealed to her Instagram followers. "I have the most photos of her, she's been in cosplay videos and I've had the best feedback about her. Plus this was such a fun cosplay to do with my partner. We matched so well [and] people really loved us together. His suit was amazing. "I was finishing [my costume] the night before con and it turned out so good! She's also my most comfortable cosplay too."

5 BLACK PANTHER AND STORM

In May 2017, real-life couple Princess Angelina Cosplay and Fuse Cosplay recently dressed up as Marvel Comics characters Storm and Black Panther and they nailed their looks. Fuse Cosplay came complete with T'Challa's clawed gloves and necklace (as well as an awesome ready-for-battle pose) while Princess Angelina opted to dress in Storm's traditional attire featuring her iconic long white hair and headdress.

In the past, the loved-up twosome has cosplayed as Star Trek's Uhura and Spock, Mortal Kombat's Raiden and Kitana, and Snow White and Prince Charming. According to their Instagram accounts though, the pair are currently gearing up to cosplay as DC Comics characters Aquaman and Mera for New York Comic-Con, so be sure to look out for them if you're attending the event.

4 DCEU'S HARLEY AND THE JOKER

Since their conception in DC's comics, The Joker and Harley Quinn have been seen sporting many different looks across all kinds of mediums. From comic books and animated series to live-action movies, not one imagination is ever quite the same. So when Dutch cosplayer Hybrid Cosplays and girlfriend Tara went to Amsterdam Comic Con in September 2017, they had to pick a version each. They opted for Jared Leto and Margot Robbie's take on the characters from the recently released film Suicide Squad, so were charged with putting a more gangster, slightly modern spin on the zany villains.

In photos by Jochem van Hoogstraten, the pair show off their outfits; Hybrid Cosplays wearing an unbuttoned white shirt underneath a purple leather jacket, and Tara in red and blue hot-pants with Robbie's iconic 'Daddy's Lil Monster' T-shirt. We particularly love how they've really channeled the character's attitudes in the shots.

3 JEAN GREY AND CYCLOPS

Our favorite couple costumes have got to be the ones where the cosplayers fancy dress as canonically fictional couples, so this copy of X-Men's Jean Grey and Scott Summers (aka Cyclops) couldn't help but catch our eye. Unfortunately, it was impossible to track down the mutant-mimicking individuals but fans can get a good look at their fantastic ensembles from Megacon 2013 thanks to photographer First Person Shooter.

The elusive pair chose to recreate Jean and Cyclops' more classic get-ups from the '90s comics, with Jean-cosplayer wearing the character's recognizable yellow and dark blue catsuit and Cyclops-cosplayer created the illusion of a matching costume with light brown shorts over a blue morph suit. Our favorite part of the costumes has got to be their headgear though, with the female cosplayer sporting Jean's heavy headdress and the male cosplayer's shiny visor.

2 WONDER WOMAN AND STEVE TREVOR

This retired couple are the ultimate relationship goal when it comes to cosplay. Known only as Cosplay Parents online, the loved-up duo have dressed up as characters such as Doctor Who and Amy Pond, Han Solo and Leia Organa and Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter in the past. But in September 2017, social media caught wind of the pair and a photograph of them dressed as Diana Prince (aka Wonder Woman) and Steve Trevor soon received a whopping 16,000 likes.

It was so popular in fact that Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins even discovered them and tweeted her appreciation for their cosplay efforts. Sharing the image, she wrote: "So amazing and touching! Love them." While they have their own Instagram, Twitter and Facebook pages, the brilliant image above was snapped by fellow fancy dress enthusiasts The Nerd Lys.

1 STAR-LORD AND GAMORA

What we love most about this take on Guardians of the Galaxy's Star-Lord and Gamora is its gender-bending. Sheila and Sylar -- an Arizona-based couple known as Aicosu within the cosplay community -- opted for the character of the opposite sex to fancy dress as when they attended Anime Los Angeles way back in 2015.

Apart from the genderswap, the duo's attention to detail is obvious; Sylar even made sure to put a shock of red/pink in his hair, just like Zoe Saldana's Gamora and Sheila's Star-Lord came complete with old-school headphones and confident facial expression. In terms of further coupled-up cosplays, the pair have fancy dressed as Star Wars: The Force Awakens characters Kylo Ren and Rey before, as well as Marvel's Loki and Enchantress.

Which of these couples cosplays is your favorite? Let us know in the comments!
