Laika Entertainment, the animation studio behind the 2009 adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline, is setting its sights on Wildwood, a young-adult fantasy novel by Decemberists lead singer Colin Meloy and his wife Carson Ellis.
Published last week by HarperCollins imprint Balzer + Bray, Wildwood is set in a fictional version of Portland, Oregon, where Prue McKneel and her friend Curtis uncover a world of magic and danger after her younger brother is kidnapped by crows, forcing her to venture into the Impassable Wilderness a the edge of the city. The book is the first part in a planned trilogy.
“It’s a story in the grand tradition of Tolkien, as big as ‘Lord of the Rings’ with a wonderful contemporary quality as well,” Laika CEO Travis Knight tells Variety. “Nothing of its kind has been attempted in our medium. You have these epic scenes alongside very nuanced character moments, which are the two hardest things to do in stop-motion. It’s exciting to imagine how this might all come together.”
