This week I have no desire (or time) to write about comic books because I’m too busy making them. If you’re a regular reader then you probably already know that I work in graphic design and a few of my clients are comic books. With some of them I’m deep in it right now; compiling the trade paperback books, researching imagery, sketching people, and all manner of other time-consuming activities (I know it sounds weird, it’ll all make sense when they come out).
For now, here are the ads I’m working on for two of the titles; Sex and The Bounce (both monthly, from Image comics):
The ad (above) for SEX is a work-in-progress, in fact since it’ll be a double page ad and I want the word SEX to break up better across the fold, it’ll never actually look exactly like this. There are more elements to add too… Apart from my line art, type, background and logo, inside the logo I used Piotr Kowalski’s beautiful drawing of the city in the background. It is the same art I used in the logo when I designed the ad in the back of the trade paperback of SEX Vol1: The Summer of Hard. That time I overlaid the logo with yellow and I drew a woman lying on top of the logo and used vinyl in the background instead of silk. My main concern this time was drawing an elegant, cliched, pin-up type of figure, and still keeping it plausible (always tricky). Her profile is similar to the one used on the cover of the first volume too, bringing that full-circle too.
When I saw David Messina’s art in The Bounce #9, I knew I had to use it for an ad. As the story comes to a head, David has really been throwing our hero around and growing him into the wild superhero we created him to be. I love the energy in this.
The logo disintegration is growing and the chaos of it echoes the energy of the dynamic art (and the flying bullets). I wanted an ad that could easily be used on the back of a comic so it’s a vertical layout, pretty standard. By making it more modular and cropping it the way I did, I repeated the filmic, letterbox layout of the first ad I did for the #1 of the book nearly a year ago.
Thanks for looking, next week I’ll try to get into writing about these comic books… or something. Just between you and me, this process of making comics is pretty damn great.
