Legendary comic book author Chris Claremont will be signing copies of graphic novels and trade paperback comics on Wednesday, December 1, at 7:30 PM at Borders in Midtown (2 Penn Plaza). The signing is part of December One at Borders, a series of special events at stores nationwide to commemorate World AIDS Day.
Borders will donate 25% of the proceeds from the sale of these creator’s works to Lifebeat – Music Fights HIV. Lifebeat is a nonprofit that uses the power of music and the music industry to help educate young people about HIV/AIDS prevention. For more than seventeen years, Lifebeat has helped to mobilize the talents and resources of the music industry to raise awareness and funds, and to provide support to the HIV-positive community. Chris Claremont is one of the comic industries most valuable contributors. He is regarded as a hallmark Marvel comic author and is most famous for his 16 year run on Uncanny X-men. During his time writing Uncanny X-Men the book became one of the most successful comic titles in history. Claremont wrote classic X-Men storylines like the Dark Phoenix Saga, Days of Future Past, Inferno and The X-tinction Agenda. Claremont also created many of the X-Men and Marvel’s most popular characters, including Rogue, Phoenix, Psylocke, Shadowcat, Sabretooth, Mystique, Emma Frost, Jubilee, Rachel Summers, Mister Sinister, Madelyne Pryor, and Gambit.
Throughout the 70’s and 80’s Chris Claremont also created or worked on many other X-Franchise titles, including New Mutants, Excalibur, X-Factor and 1991’s X-Men, which holds the title of the best selling single issue comic book of all time. Claremont later wrote The Fantastic Four, X-treme X-Men, New Excalibur and Exiles.
Outside of his work for Marvel Comics Chris Claremont has written the Star Trek: Debt of Honor graphic novel, Sovereign Seven for DC Comis, WildC.A.T.S. for Image Comics and Aliens vs. Predator for Dark Horse Comics.
Claremont has been awarded Comic Buyer’s Guide’s “Favorite Writer” fan award; in 1983, 1984, 1988, 1989 and 1990. He also won their awards for “Favorite Comic Book Story” in 1990 (The X-tnction Agenda) and “Favorite Graphic Novel or Album” in 1992 (Star Trek: Debt of Honor).
