In this feature, I share with you three comic book “easter eggs.” An easter egg is a joke/visual gag/in-joke that a comic book creator (typically the artist) has hidden in the pages of the comic for readers to find (just like an easter egg). They range from the not-so-obscure to the really obscure. So come check ’em all out and enjoy! Also, click here for an archive of all the easter eggs featured so far! If you want to suggest an easter egg for a future column, e-mail me at email@example.com (do not post your suggestion in the comments section!).
Today is a special theme edition. All easter eggs involving Waldo (of Where’s Waldo? fame) hidden in comic books.
We begin with a few appearances of Waldo that I’ve featured before in earlier editions of Comic Book Easter Eggs.
First, in Hulk: Future Imperfect #1 (suggested by Jeff Ryan), George Perez hid Waldo, of Where’s Waldo? fame, somewhere in this double-page spread. See if you can find him!
(click on the image to enlarge, naturally – I scanned it in BIG so you could see it easily)
Next, reader João astutely picked up on Waldo being hidden in the last page of 2013’s Gambit #8 by Clay Mann…
See if you can spot him!
As a quick aside, I also did a Movie Legends Revealed on Waldo being hidden in Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto.
Plus, check out a Children’s Literature Legends Revealed about the uproar over an exposed female breast in one of the Where’s Waldo? books!
On to the new ones!
In Promethea #11, J.H. Williams III and Mick Gray hid Waldo in a crowd scene…
And in Darkwing Duck #8 (among many other easter eggs I’ll likely feature in the future), writer Ian Brill and artist James Silvani hid a Darkwing Duck version of Waldo in the issue…
Finally, on the cover of Simpsons Comics #49, Waldo is hidden on the cover in a Where’s Waldo homage piece…
