In this feature, I share with you three comic book “easter eggs.” An easter egg is a joke/visual gag/in-joke that a comic book creator (typically the artist) has hidden in the pages of the comic for readers to find (just like an easter egg). They range from the not-so-obscure to the really obscure. So come check ’em all out and enjoy! Also, click here for an archive of all the easter eggs featured so far! If you want to suggest an easter egg for a future column, e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org (do not post your suggestion in the comments section!).
Today, in honor of the release of Man of Steel this week, we take a look at a few Superman easter eggs, including cameos by Jerry Sienfeld, Spider-Man and much, much (MUCH) more!
First up, we have 1997’s Superman: The Man of Steel #67, where Jon Bogdanove and Dennis Janke show the effects of Superman’s then new (and uncontrollable) energy powers on the Whitty Banter show (a popular talk show in Metropolis), whose guests include Bibbo, Elaine Benes and Jerry Seinfeld…well, at least until the electricity hits…
and then he becomes Cosmo Kramer!
Thanks to Alejandro M.G. for suggesting this one!
Next, based on a suggestion by Francesco V, we have Superman #701, part of J. Michael Straczynski’s storyline of Superman walking across the United States. In this issue, artists Eddy Barrow and J.P. Mayer draw Peter Parker covering the news event of the season, Superman walking across the U.S. Only Peter notes it really is not all THAT exciting…
Finally, based on another one of Alejandro’s suggestions, we have 1996’s Superman: The Wedding Album (this scene is drawn by Dan Jurgens and Jerry Ordway). When Clark and Lois are married, it is Jerry Siegel as the minister. But look – up in the crowd! Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it is a whole crapload of Superman writers, artists and editors. Can YOU name them all (click on the image to enlarge it… a LOT)?
Thanks for the suggestions, folks! If YOU have a suggestion for a future edition of Comic Book Easter Eggs, drop me a line at email@example.com!
