Every week, I will be sharing with you three comic book "easter eggs." An easter egg is a joke/visual gag/in-joke that a comic book creator (typically the artist) has hidden in the pages of the comic for readers to find (just like an easter egg). They range from the not-so-obscure to the really obscure. So come check 'em all out and enjoy! Also, click here for an archive of all the easter eggs featured so far! If you want to suggest an easter egg for a future column, e-mail me at bcronin@comicbookresources.com (do not post your suggestion in the comments section!).

As we get ready to say goodbye to Hellblazer, I thought it would be fun to take a look at a trio of John Constantine Easter Eggs in comics outside of the Vertigo and DC Comics Universe...

First up is a tremendous one from the Crossgen title, Mystic #15, suggested to me by John Thorpe (he provided the scans, as well).

In it, the lead character goes into a bar for magic people, and artists Brandon Peterson and John Dell just decided to draw ACTUAL magical characters from both Marvel and DC. How many can you name?

Of course, when the comic was later reprinted, the characters were all altered to make them analogues and not the actual characters. Pretty funny, though, while it lasted!

In any event, on the second page, right behind Scarlet Witch you can see John Constantine's back.

Next, in Authority #9 (technically published by DC Comics at the time), Warren Ellis, Bryan Hitch and Paul Neary have the Doctor meet up with all of the past Doctors, and you'll see some familiar faces, including, of course, John Constantine...

Finally, a different sort of Easter Egg appeared in Hellstorm #2, by writer Rafael Nieves and artist Michael Bair, as Hellstorm tells Doctor Strange about John Constantine (this would be a couple of years after Garth Ennis' famous story of Constantine dying of lung cancer, going to hell and tricking his way back to life)...
