Comic Book Easter Eggs - Chris Claremont Pays Homage to Alien (And Not the Way You Think)

Every week, I will be sharing with you three comic book "easter eggs." An easter egg is a joke/visual gag/in-joke that a comic book creator (typically the artist) has hidden in the pages of the comic for readers to find (just like an easter egg). Chris Claremont has done a few comics (whether intentional or not) with characters reminiscent of the film Alien. Whether it is the demon that Kitty Pryde faces in the last issue that Claremont and John Byrne did together of Uncanny X-Men or the longtime X-Men opponent, the Brood, Claremont seems to have a fascination with the Ridley Scott classic (plus, of course, he actually wrote Alien comic books, too). An interesting expression of this interest came in Spider-Woman #35, written by Claremont with art by Steve Leialoha and Al Gordon, when Angar the Screamer (who can make people hallucinate through his screams) meets up with the two of his cohorts, who share the name and the likeness of Ash and Ripley from Alien (played by Ian Holm and Sigourney Weaver, respectively).

Notice, in particular, how Ripley dies.
