Columbia’s Venom Could Tie Into The Amazing Spider-Man

Columbia’s Venom Could Tie Into The Amazing Spider-Man

Taking a page from the Marvel Studios playbook, Columbia Pictures appears set to interweave the world of The Amazing Spider-Man and that of the studio’s long-discussed Venom project.

“What I’m trying to say to you without giving anything away is hopefully all these worlds will live together in peace someday,” producer Matthew Tolmach told rather obliquely. Josh Trank, who’s a hot commodity following the success of his low-budget found-footage superpower film Chronicle, is expected to direct Venom.

“It’s an Eddie Brock story,” producer Avi Arad said, changing the subject. “We want to be as close to the comics as possible. Especially in Eddie Brock’s story. But again, pseudo-science is becoming science. All these tidbits about webs, artificial webs, is a huge industry now. Spiderwebs have unique qualities that will be huge for communications, fibers, and so forth. So we have taken the approach that we want to make the huge amazing movie about Eddie.”

The scientific slant fits in with the more real world approach that director Marc Webb seems to be going after with The Amazing Spider-Man. To keep things further grounded, the producers want the film to remain based in character.

“He was a journalist,” Tomach said. “He had the wrong story, he got in trouble for it, he got fired. The whole essence to us for the Marvel characters. Stay close to the bible, stay close to the emotional story, and the rest is fun.”

Another question this raises is whether Eddie Brock will appear in The Amazing Spider-Man, which opens July 3. He’s not listed on the IMDb page, but that doesn’t mean we won’t get a peek at who might fill the symbiote suit in the future.
