One major mystery has surrounded Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. since even before the ABC series premiered: How is Agent Phil Coulson alive?

Several theories have sprung up since Coulson seemingly died at Loki's hand in The Avengers, with some contending he never bought the farm to begin with, while others speculate that he might've been an advanced, robotic Life Model Decoy. The 10th episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. found Project Centipede capturing Coulson in an effort to learn how he came back from the dead. So, it seems as if we'll finally get an answer when the show returns tonight at 8 ET/PT.

Actor Clark Gregg spoke to several different outlets about tonight's episode, called "The Magical Place," explaining to TV Guide what Project Centipede has in store for his character. "Coulson ends up in the unenviable position of being captive in the hands of people who want and have the technology to extract the secrets of his resurrection," Gregg said. "That is the same thing that he wants, but he wants that information without giving it to them.

"They have technology that can reveal those memories, and it's not a pleasant experience for Coulson," he continued. "Yet, if he can endure it, there is a possibility that he can get the truth, although to even go down that road endangers all the secrets of S.H.I.E.L.D."

Gregg also spoke to Zap2It and made it sound like the Coulson death reveal will play out over the remainder of the first season.

Stan Lee to Appear on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

"The way our team has kind of turned the back half of this season into a reveal that uses the mystery of Coulson's death not just as a standalone reveal but as an integral part of the bigger reveal, which is that this organization Centipede, run by this person the Clairvoyant, has been part of almost everything we've done and connects on a deep level to everything going forward," Gregg said. "[Centipede] is determined to destroy S.H.I.E.L.D. and, to Coulson's chagrin, has some of the same questions about S.H.I.E.L.D. that Coulson himself is starting to evolve."
