The relationship between Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes has been at the forefront of all three "Captain America" movies. That's especially true of the just released "Civil War," which finds Steve fighting to keep his oldest friend from falling into the wrong hands, be they those of the government or people intending to turn him into a weapon. In a chat with The Daily Beast, actor Sebastian Stan discussed Bucky's emotional state in "Civil War," and also touched upon the Winter Soldier's deep relationship with Captain America.

"I don't think he knows how to express his emotions," Stan says. "It's like the movie 'Taxi Driver.' He's somebody who is very alone. It's kind of depressing! He's someone who is piecing together a life and dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder. He's paranoid, because he doesn't know if he's being followed or if he's being watched. He has a hard time trusting himself because he's learning about all the things he's done that he doesn't remember. He's in a very isolated place, and he's sort of like a scared animal. He's just lost. What he does learn is that the only person, his only hope, is Steve Rogers. Because Steve Rogers is the only guy who will keep him alive."

When asked if Steve Rogers' might be doing that out of love, Stan ruminated on the pair's relationship as men out of time.

"Of course! He's his only family I mean, these guys are 99 years old," said Stan with a laugh. "Isn't it amazing when you think about it that way? They're these two guys who are totally out of a different world, they don't have anybody, they were ripped out of a past. They never had a choice, necessarily. Certainly, Bucky never had a choice. The idea for the guy was, 'I'm going to go to war, because that's what I'm supposed to do for my country, and then I'm going to come back and start a life' -- but he never did."

The Daily Beast also showed Stan a few pieces of fan art depicting the pair as more than just friends. "That's really nice," replied Stan, smiling. He then shrugged with "a playful glint in his eyes" and added, "Hey, man, people come to the movies with all kinds of things."

Stan then revealed his personal favorite meme starring his Marvel character: "My favorite was that Daft Punk song. 'Up All Night to Get Bucky!' That's great! That really is great."

"Captain America: Civil War" is in theaters now.
