"Kick-Ass" star Chloe Grace Moretz has landed the title role in a live-action retelling of "The Little Mermaid" produced not by Disney -- surprise! -- but by Working Title and Universal Pictures.

Variety reports that Richard Curtis ("Four Weddings and a Funeral," "Love Actually") is in talks to write the script.

"Been waiting a long time to tell you guys!!" Moretz tweeted this afternoon. "#TheLittleMermaid going to be a beautiful experience! Can't wait to show everyone my Mermaid!"

The film is of course based on Hans Christian Andersen's beloved 1837 fairy tale about a young mermaid who's willing to give up her life in the sea to become human. The story has been adapted dozens of times for stage, film and television, most famously in 1989 by Disney in an animated feature that grossed more than $211 million worldwide and helped to spark the Disney Renaissance.

Sofia Coppola was originally attached to direct Universal's adaptation, but exited the project over the summer.
