Seven years after the end of the FX drama "The Shield," Michael Chiklis is back in action as a member of law enforcement. The actor has joined the cast of Fox's "Gotham" in the role of Captain Nathaniel Barnes, and Entertainment Weekly has the first look at the no doubt hard-as-nails member of the GCPD.

Michael Chiklis Joins "Gotham" as Series Regular

In the image, Chiklis' character stares down a group of young officers while Detectives Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) back him up. EW's description of Nathaniel Barnes describes the character as a "law and order zealot who lands on the GCPD like a tornado, ripping out the dead wood of Gotham's police force." Considering how corrupt the GCPD is, Barnes' presence could be a good thing for truth and justice -- but then again, that would make life too easy for Gordon, wouldn't it?

"Gotham" returns to Fox on September 21.
