Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam is teaming with American Sniper writer Jason Hall and Legendary Pictures for American Drug Lord, Deadline reports. The true-crime drama is based on an article of the same name published in 2011 by Rolling Stone.

American Drug Lord will tell the true story of Edgar Valdez, a high school football player turned drug lord. The Texan became notable in the underworld for being the only U.S. citizen to ever become a drug cartel leader in Mexico. Valdez set up shop in Acapulco and made $130 million after one year of moving drugs. As his empire grew, so did his capacity for violence. Hunnam is expected to play a man known for posting footage of the executions of his rivals on the Internet.

Hunnam recently wrapped up a seven-season stint as the lead on FX's motorcycle gang drama Sons of Anarchy.
