When it came time to prepare for his role in "The Defenders," the upcoming Netflix miniseries that brings together Marvel's street-level heroes, "Daredevil" star Charlie Cox turned to the comic books.

Although he was surprised to discover the Marvel Comics series never featured the combination of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, he did find inspiration from other titles for how that lineup might interact.

“There are some fantastic moments in the 'Daredevil' series with Jessica Jones, with Luke Cage, with Iron Fist,” Cox told Entertainment Weekly. “I’ve taken note of the moments in the 'Daredevil' comics where new characters are coming in and sharing panels with Daredevil, and in terms of how Matt might operate in a team-up scenario, I read 'Civil War.' He plays a relatively big part in the comics — I mean, he’s kind of in the background for most of it, but the crux of the plan hinges on him. And so, I’m just looking for little nuggets, for stuff I can use and any clues into how I can play him.”

He hopes to reenact, or at least pay homage to, one of those little nuggets in "The Defenders": an image from "Marvel Team-Up" #9 in which Daredevil and Luke Cage share burgers and coffee on a rooftop. "I love that," Cox said.

Presumably if that makes it into the miniseries, it will be without the Spider-Man lunchbox and the Fantastic Four thermos.

Debuting this summer on Netflix, "The Defenders" also stars Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter as Luke Cage and Finn Jones as Danny Rand.
