Much like their Marvel Studios counterpart, Fox's X-Men franchise is incredibly active. Last year saw the release of two X-Movies ("Deadpool" and "X-Men: Apocalypse") and "Logan" will slash its way into theaters in just a week. "Deadpool 2" is currently in the works and, while they haven't been officially announced, two more X-Men movies will possibly film this spring and summer.

In addition to "Deadpool 2," "New Mutants" and the next "X-Men" team movie (tentatively titled "X-Men: Supernova"), there's "Gambit." Channing Tatum has been attached to the solo film from the get-go, but the film's gone through a number of directors. Original director Rupert Wyatt left the film and his successor, Doug Liman, separated from the project as well. The dust has settled and while "Gambit" doesn't have a director, it still has star Channing Tatum.

In an interview with CBR, producer Simon Kinberg spoke to Tatum's longstanding devotion to Gambit -- a devotion that predates his official involvement in the film.

"I think the thing you said about his devotion [to 'Gambit'] is true, and is critical of these movies," said Kinberg. "The success of 'Logan' creatively is about Hugh [Jackman]'s demands, in the nicest possible way because he's the nicest man on the planet, his demands for making the movie as character-driven and honest and human and relatable and real as possible. Channing feels the same way, sort of an obligation, to Gambit. And Ryan Reynolds felt that way about Deadpool. It's something that we are learning to listen to as filmmakers with these actors. If they can inhabit the role and they can bring a consistent tone to that tone, an original tone and voice to that role, then those movies are going to be successful."

Kinberg also gave an update on when they expect "Gambit" to begin production. "We're working on the script and we're hoping, truly, I think ['Gambit'] will probably shoot at the beginning of next year," said Kinberg. "Not this year, because we have quite a few X-Men movies shooting this year."

"Gambit" was originally scheduled to be released in October 2016, but rewrites and departing directors bumped back the start of production. Last we heard, the film was supposed to start production in spring 2017. Now it looks like, barring other major shakeups, "Gambit" will begin production around this time next year in 2018.

The second half of Kinberg's statement is also worth looking at. Kinberg said, "We have quite a few X-Men movies shooting this year." As of now, "Deadpool 2" and "New Mutants" have rumored production start dates this May and April, respectively. There's also the matter of "X-Men: Supernova," a film that Kinberg himself is rumored to possibly direct. Kinberg's comment could be confirmation that one, two, or all three of these films are beginning production sooner rather than later.
