The Gambit movie has had a short but eventful life that has included delays and a departure by the film’s former director, Doug Liman. The film has been flying silent since Liman’s departure, but according to the man slated to play the mutant who can imbue objects with explosive charges, Channing Tatum, the film is still on.

“Yeah, of course,” Tatum said in an interview with Comicbook.com. “We're working on it right now."

Tatum didn’t let any additional details slip, but his stoic reassurance might be enough to calm fans eager to see Gambit grace the big screen once again. The character, whose real name is Remy LeBeau, has only ever been featured in the critically panned X-Men Origins: Wolverine, played by Taylor Kitsch. Tatum’s take on the character might be the best chance for the fan-favorite X-Man to get his time to shine.

Created by Chris Claremont, Mike Collins and Jim Lee, Gambit first appeared in Uncanny X-Men Annual #1990 as a cameo, going to make his first full appearance in Uncanny X-Men #266 in 1990. An orphan, Gambit was stolen as an infant by the New Orleans Thieves Guild because of his black and red eyes. During his time in the guild, Gambit became a master thief. He eventually came to the aid of Storm and was subsequently admitted into the X-Men.

There is currently no planned release date for Gambit.
