CCI 2006 Sets CBLDF Fundraising Record!

Official Press Release

The CBLDF is honored to thank all of our members, supporters, and partners for helping make Comic-Con International: San Diego 2006 the Fund’s most successful convention on record! The Fund raised nearly $67,000 at the Con, putting the organization on solid ground for managing the remainder of the year’s legal work.

Fundraising highlights included the Thursday night CBLDF Welcome Party, sponsored by Image, IDW Publishing, Prism, SuicideGirls.com, Diamond Select Toys, and Dark Horse. The party attracted over 300 friends of the Fund who enjoyed the relaxing outdoor environs of the Westgate Hotel’s Terrace Under the Stars. During the party, Dark Horse President Mike Richardson presented the Fund with an $18,000 donation from the Adidas adicolor apparel released earlier this year. Lee Whiteside, of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America presented the CBLDF with a check for $4,858, from funds raised during this year’s charity auction at the Nebula Awards Weekend.

The Fund’s Saturday night auction raised a whopping $27,000 under the skilled auctioneering of Mile High Comics’ Chuck Rozanski and CBLDF board member Peter David! Auction highlights included Frank Miller’s original cover to All Star Batman & Robin #1; original Will Eisner art donated by Denis Kitchen Art Agency; and art jams by Jim Lee, Ale Garza, Carlos D’Anda & Rich Friend donated by WildStorm. In addition to being the Fund’s most successful live auction in recent memory, it was also the most well attended!

On the show floor Fund supporters were able to meet Jim Lee, Paul Levitz, Greg Rucka, Amanda Conner, Kurt Busiek, Eric Powell, Fabio Moon & Gabriel Ba, and Steve Niles during special signings at the Fund’s table. Fans were also able to get fantastic artwork on the CBLDF Sketch Cards, which were a smash-hit at the show. The CBLDF thanks all the artists who participated in the Sketch Card program: Jim Lee, Matt Wagner, Terry Moore, Eric Powell, Amanda Conner, Erik Larsen, Sergio Aragones, Dan Brereton, Rick Remender, Cully Hamner, Robbi Rodriguez, Andy MacDonald, Jason Latour, Dean Haspiel, Phil Hester, Eric Shanower, Jeffrey Brown, Alex Robinson, Andy Runton, Fabio Moon, Gabriel Ba, Tom Hodges, and Nate Bellegrade. If you didn’t get a Sketch Card in San Diego, don’t fret, they’ll be available at every convention the Fund attends, so watch for them when we come to your town!

CBLDF Executive Director Charles Brownstein says, “All of us at the Fund are very grateful for the tremendous support that fans and industry members showed us at San Diego. The funds raised there will allow us to go into the next phase of the Gordon Lee case with confidence that we’ll have the money we need to march to victory.”

CBLDF President Chris Staros says, “Comics is a generous community by its very nature, but it’s truly humbling when we receive such an incredible show of support. The Fund and its board of directors are happy to thank all of the fans, pros, and volunteers that made this year’s San Diego a high watermark for the Fund!”
