Executive Producer Marc Guggenheim set sail on the CBR TV yacht at Comic-Con International in San Diego to discuss all things “Arrow,” the CW’s upcoming series based on DC Comics’ Green Arrow. Guggenheim goes into the development of the series and the thought processes behind the decisions on what to change about the character of Oliver Queen and which aspects from the comic book version to maintain for the live action version, citing Christopher Nolan’s approach to the Dark Knight films as inspiration.
Coleen Atwood’s costume is key to this, according to Guggenheim, with a design that looks great on camera but maintains a level of real-world practicality often missing in superhero television shows. For Oliver Queen, it’s not a costume – it’s a functional uniform.
As for guest stars, in addition to Deathstroke, China White (played by Lucy Hu) will be making the transition from the printed page of the DCU to the small screen, and the rest of the series will be filled with Easter eggs, for example, Oliver’s little sister being nicknamed Speedy and Mike Grell providing the art for a police sketch of Queen in his Arrow outfit.
The series’ story arc is discussed with Guggenheim explaining that the plan is to tell a 5-year story, though the series is developed in a way that they could expand beyond that if necessary without the need to simply add filler.
