Captain Marvel: Feige Reveals Kree/Skrull War Influences

Kevin Feige surprised Marvel Cinematic Universe fans everywhere during the studio’s Hall H panel yesterday when he revealed that not only would Captain Marvel be set during the 90’s, but that the Skrulls would serve as the villains in the film. With the Skrulls having yet to make their MCU debut, what led to the decision to introduce them in Captain Marvel? According to Feige, they thought it would be “fun.”

Following Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel yesterday, Kevin Feige took to the press line where he was asked about the surprise reveals regarding Captain Marvel, including the introduction of the Skrulls and what led to the decision to bring them into the MCU with this film. As Feige explained to IGN, with the Kree/Skrull War having played such a big role throughout the comics, he wanted to tap into that on the big screen and felt that it was something that made sense to belong to Captain Marvel.

“There’s an entire section of our comics that deal with the Kree/Skrull War and we haven’t tapped into that at all. And we thought that would be an amazing, huge portion of mythology to belong to Captain Marvel.”

As for why the Skrulls have gone unmentioned for so long within the MCU, Feige seemed to imply we’ll get our answer in Captain Marvel.

The Skrulls are a nefarious shape-shifting alien species that were first created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby for Fantastic Four #2. They famously went to war with the Kree in the Avengers storyline The Kree/Skrull War and later went on to pose as superheroes in the Marvel Comics event series Secret Invasion. While this will mark the first appearance of the Skrulls in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Kree have appeared on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as in Guardians of the Galaxy.
