|“Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America – Iron Man” #5|
Marvel Comics’ Captain America is to be buried at Arlington Cemetery, the AP reported today. In July 5th ‘s “Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America – Iron Man” #5, surrounded by thousands of grieving friends and admirers, pallbearers Iron Man, Black Panther, Ben Grimm and Ms. Marvel will lower Steve Rogers’ flag-draped casket into its final resting place, ending 66 years of patriotism and heroism.
Writer Jeph Loeb admitted to the AP the metaphorical nature of the “Fallen Son” saga. “Part of it grew out of the fact that we are a country that’s at war, we are being perceived differently in the world,” Loeb said. “He wears the flag and he is assassinated – it’s impossible not to have it at least be a metaphor for the complications of present day.”
Naturally, death in superhero comics is a notoriously indefinite diagnosis, and Marvel admits that you never know what will happen, but Leob believes the question of whether Captain America will rise from the dead isn’t important. “If that story of his return gets told further down the line, great,” he said. “But everyone’s still been dealing with his loss.
“They aren’t going to wake up and it’s a dream, like it’s some episode of ‘Dallas.'”
