Although “Rio 2” may have won the battle on Friday, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” ended up winning the war for the domestic weekend box office.
His secret weapon? Sunshine, apparently. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” brought in $41.4 million at the North American box office, compared to the $39 million brought in by “Rio 2.” The trade said the animated sequel saw way less of a bump on Saturday than expected, noting the good weather in most of the country could have kept parents and kids outdoors.
Overseas, “Rio 2” outpaced the second “Cap” film, bringing in $62.3 million compared to $60.6 million. In the overall global box office, “Rio 2″ grossed $101.3 million, while “Captain America” raked in just under $102 million.
So far the sequel to “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” has brought in an estimated $159 million domestically, according to Box Office Mojo — so it’s closing in fast on the $176.6 million brought in by the first “Captain America” film three years ago. Globally, the Disney and Marvel Studio film has made $476.1 million — well above the $370.6 million earned by the first “Captain America” in its entire run.
Looking at the rest of the domestic box office, the horror film “Oculus” opened with $12 million, enough to land in third place, while “Draft Day,” the Kevin Costner-starring football drama opened with $9.8 million.
