‘Captain America’ Director On Cap’s New Suit

Have you noticed something different about Steve Rogers’ costume in Captain America: The Winter Soldier? Gone are the red-and-white colors commonly associated with the Marvel hero’s suit, with a heavier emphasis on navy blues — much like Rogers’ “Super Soldier” costume that debuted in comics a few years ago.

“It was about a real-world grounding approach to the character, in the spirit of Ed Brubaker’s book, which is postmodern and deconstructionist and a grounded thriller,” co-director Joe Russo explained to SFX Magazine.

“We wanted to put Cap in a space where he’s a special forces operative for S.H.I.E.L.D. who goes on missions around the world that are clandestine and sometimes require a certain level of anonymity or stealth,” he continued. “We wanted to use his Super Soldier outfit from the comic books as a way to represent, thematically, his place in the world of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the difference between working for S.H.I.E.L.D. and being Captain America.”

Sounds like a fair enough answer. And if you’re not fond of the Super Soldier suit, never fear: Looking at the trailers, it’s clear Rogers winds up in his traditional Cap costume before too long.

Arriving April 4, Captain America: The Winter Soldier stars Chris Evans as Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie as Falcon, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill, Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow, Georges St-Pierre as Georges Batroc, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Toby Jones as Arnim Zola, Emily VanCamp as Agent 13, Maximiliano Hernández as Agent Jasper Sitwell and Robert Redford as Agent Alexander Pierce.
