Captain America and X-Men Still in Running for Visual Effects Oscar

After the first round of voting, Captain America: The First Avenger, X-Men: First Class and Transformers: Dark of the Moon remain among the 10 contenders for the Academy Award for Achievement in Visual Effects.

Cowboys & Aliens, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Sucker Punch, Super 8 and Thor were culled by the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee from the original list of 15 nominees, leaving:

• Captain America: The First Avenger
• Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
• Hugo
• Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol
• Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
• Real Steel
• Rise of the Planet of the Apes
• Transformers: Dark of the Moon
• The Tree of Life
• X-Men: First Class

Members of the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch will view 10-minute excerpts from each of the shortlisted films on Jan. 19 and vote to nominate five features for final Oscar consideration. Nominees for the 84th annual Academy Awards will be announced Jan. 24. The winners will be presented Feb. 26.
