When "Gotham" returns for its third season, it will bring with it a host of new threats for the city. Chief among them is the Court of Owls, which was revealed in the closing episodes of Season 2 as the driving force behind Dr. Hugo Strange's experiments at Indian Hill.

In a new teaser for the upcoming season, we hear the question “Who runs Wayne Enterprises?” being answered “The Board of Directors” with the kind of fervor only ignorance can muster. Until, that is, it’s countered with “Incorrect”. Leaving the city for his own safety and, seemingly, to research the occult conspiracy, Bruce comes back to the city with the intention of bringing them down.

Originally created by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo in 2011, the Court of Owls is a secret group that has been infiltrating and controlling every aspect of the city of Gotham City since colonial times. It's a violent conspiracy, uniting many of the wealthiest families in Gotham in a deadly cabal of murder, blackmail and subterfuge.

The trailer definitely contains the tension, mystery and high-stakes the series has successfully generated in the previous seasons, but fans of the comics must be wondering if the creepy nursery rhyme about The Court of Owls will feature:

Beware the Court of Owls, that watches all the time,

Ruling Gotham from a shadowed perch, behind granite and lime.

They watch you at your hearth, they watch you in your bed.

Speak not a whispered word about them, or they'll send the Talon for your head.

"Gotham" returns to Fox on September 19.
