Despite initial fears about his age, Matt Smith has impressed me as the new Doctor Who, and new showrunner Steven Moffat has done the same; I think the new season has been the strongest the show’s been since its relaunch in 2005. So why are British viewers abandoning the series?
According to reports, Who has dropped from 7.2 million viewers on average for the last season to 6 million this year in the UK. Why? Was David Tennant that much of a draw, or have audiences simply grown bored of the adventures of a Time Lord and his cute companion? Haven’t they noticed that the writing is so much better this year? Sometimes I despair – but the BBC, apparently, doesn’t; their response is that the audience has stayed consistent, once internet and time-shifted viewers are factored in. Not to mention everyone torrenting the show in the US, of course.
