After being (temporarily) removed from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn remained involved in crafting a superhero film. The upcoming Brightburn was produced by Gunn, and if you weren't sure already, the final trailer makes it clear the film is a return to Gunn's horror roots.

The movie takes obvious inspiration from the Superman mythos, but twists it into a much darker narrative. Brightburn revolves around a couple trying to raise their son, who is actually an alien who crash-landed on Earth as a baby. When the boy begins to develop extraordinary abilities in his adolescence, he turns on his family and the world at large.

While earlier teasers set up the film's plot (including a particularly gruesome red band trailer), this one spends more time focusing on the film's tone, making sure audiences go into the film knowing it has more in common with The Conjuring than Man of Steel.

Brightburn is written by Brian and Mark Gunn. The film stars Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn, Matt Jones, Meredith Hagner, Steve Agee, Becky Wahlstrom and Stephen Blackehart. It opens May 24.
