When Brian Michael Bendis appeared last week on NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers, he did more than promote Playstation Network's Powers adaptation and Marvel's Secret Wars. He also offered up some comic-book recommendations.

In "Comic Book Gateway," a video shot backstage at Late Night and released this week, the writer suggests some titles for newcomers. While he gives nods to Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Wars, Bendis devotes most of his time to creator-owned comics.

Among his recommendations are Bitch Planet by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Valentine de Landro, Lazarus by Greg Rucka and Michael Lark, and Demon by Jason Shiga. And then there's Sex Criminals by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, which Bendis describes as, "an adult, kind of Judd Apatow book about exactly what you think it is -- y'know, your normal story about two people who, when they have sex, they stop time and rob banks."

"There's nothing you can't do in comics," Bendis says. "That's my favorite thing about comics: TV shows have budgets, movies have budgets, comics don't. [...] The only thing standing in the way is the creators' imagination. It's just a blank page to be filled up, full of imagination, stories and characters."
