Brave New World launches “Master Class: Writing for Comics” With Mark Waid

Official Press Release

Brave New World Comics, the 2008 Eisner award winning super store located in Los Angeles’ Santa Clarita Valley, is proud to announce the opening of their Master Class Series.

Writing for Comics with Mark Waid is the first in a brand new series of classes that the community friendly store plans to offer. “Mark is a tremendously popular and talented writer.”, says Portlyn, co-owner of the store, “We’re thrilled that he’s going to be sharing his wisdom and experience with our students!”.

Learn the craft of telling comics’ stories from Master of the Medium Mark Waid!

Saturday, September 12th -Mark will be teaching in the loft at Brave New World

Class Description from the scribe professor himself:

“The class will begin with a brief lecture that zips past the basic beginner stuff and right into the heavier stuff. It’s assumed that students already have at least a passing familiarity with what a comics script looks like (examples will be provided, but suggested advance-prep is to visit the blog at and read the “Writing 101″ columns), so the focus will be on the finer points–how ideas are developed; how to make sure they’re ideas that are right for the medium and not just disguised film scripts that don’t work as comics; what editors and publishers look for; some of the less-obvious do’s and don’ts; and most of all, how to go from an idea to a pitch to a formal proposal to a script to a series.

After a catered lunch, the afternoon will include a free-form Q&A specifically centered on how to solve common script and storytelling problems, including typical problems young writers might not even recognize they have; students are encouraged to ask questions both general and specific so that they feel their own objectives for the day are met.

Depending on the size of the class and the time available, there may be some small-group workshop exercises and critiques, as well. ”
