Boyhood, the coming-of-age film shot over the course of 12 years, emerged the big winner Sunday at the 72nd Golden Globe Awards, earning prizes for best drama, best director for Richard Linklater and best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.

Selected by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Golden Globes delivered a bit of a surprise when Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel walked away with best musical or comedy, edging out Birdman, which led the field of nominations with seven. Still, director Alejandro González Iñárritu's black comedy didn't leave empty-handed: the film received honors for screenplay and for actor Michael Keaton. Amy Adams was also named best actress in a drama for Big Eyes.

In the TV division, Showtime's The Affair, Amazon Studios' Transparent and FX's Fargo tied with two wins each: The Affair for best drama and for best actress (Ruth Wilson);  Transparent for best comedy and for best actor in a comedy (Jeffrey Tambor); and Fargo for best miniseries and best actor in a miniseries (Billy Bob Thornton).

Kevin Spacey was named best actor in a drama for his role on Netflix's House of Cards, while Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez went home with the trophy for best actress in a comedy, marking the first Golden Globe for The CW.
