BOOM! Launches Teen Detective Series “Goldie Vance” By Larson & Williams

Starting this April, a teen detective will be on the hunt for clues in a new limited series. The LA Times has announced the latest title in BOOM! Studios’ BOOM! Box imprint — “Goldie Vance,” a four-issue teen mystery series from writer Hope Larson (“A Wrinkle in Time: The Graphic Novel”) and artist Brittney Williams (Marvel’s “Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat!”). The series will star the titular 16-year-old detective-in-training, Marigold “Goldie” Vance, who resides in Florida at her father’s resort.

Larson and Williams spoke about the series as well as the new detective character they’ll be introducing to readers of all ages. “Goldie is someone who believes she can fix anything,” said Larson. “She’s fascinated by how things work, and how people work. She’s grown up in Crossed Palms, a resort hotel where her dad works as manager, and sees all the moving pieces that make it run, which is helpful in solving a mystery! She works as a valet and is obsessed with cars.”

The creators also revealed that Goldie won’t be solving mysteries alone, as she’ll have a supporting cast. “Goldie has a lot of help!” said Larson. “Her ‘team’ includes Walter, the smart-but-awkward hotel detective who she ‘assists’ whether he likes it or not, and her best friend Cheryl, who works the front desk and dreams of becoming an astronaut. Goldie sometimes does function as a lone wolf, but it’s when she does, without one of her less-impulsive friends to keep her in check, that she tends to get into trouble.”

Artist Williams spoke about how she got involved with the series. “After reading the pitch and the character descriptions I instantly had ideas for most of the characters,” said Williams. “I usually spend a few days just thinking about the characters and their world before I start sketching anything. When I do finally start drawing, I have a ton of ideas, and visually the characters are a lot clearer. In the beginning, I didn’t have any specific ideas. I like to go in blank and let the story guide my imagination!”
