WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Bloodshot, in theaters now.

Bloodshot is primarily focused on action more than anything, with the characters being a much more minor element of the film. There isn't much depth afforded to the cast as they blend into the background more than anything else. However, there's one character who actually comes across with any personality.

Wilfred Wigans, the genius coder who ends up becoming an ally to Garrison and helps him take his revenge against the people who manipulated him, is quietly the best part of the film.

THE DEAL WITH WIGGINS

Wiggings is introduced during Garrison's mission to take down Nick Baris, a former associate of Dr. Emil Harting. He's a genius coder and considered to be one of the brightest minds on the planet. Harting's chief assistant Eric goes so far lists him as one of the most intelligent coders, even using some of his open-source code for the technology that powers Garrison in the first place. He's even been recruited by Baris to develop an EMP that could theoretically bring down Garrison and remove many of his attributes. But Wiggins is smart enough to make sure he escapes danger long enough to avoid Garrison's rampage through the compound, allowing him to finally escape Baris and use the EMP himself to take out Garrison.

As Wiggins explains to Garrison once he reactivates the nanites in his blood, Wiggings was essentially being held prisoner and forced to devise new technology for Baris. Wiggins is unencumbered by his death and is just happy to be free. But instead of just fleeing in a panic, he realizes that Garrison will likely be sent after him next. Seeing someone who's going through the same kind of crisis as he has endeared him to Wiggins. He tries to go into hiding but is quickly captured by KT. However, instead of being brought to Harting, Wiggins is given the chance to help Garrison break free and wipe out Harting's forces. He even proves crucial towards letting Garrison loose by hacking into Eric's systems and freeing him to go to battle. The film ends with Wiggins actually getting a major boost in his life, serving as the apparent new technical side for whatever missions Garrison and KT go on going forward.

WHY WIGGINS IS KIND OF GREAT

The goofy geek who helps the hero is a standard character to appear in films like Bloodshot. But Wiggins stands out as a memorable version of this character, especially for how he juxtaposes against Garrison. While they have the basic personality differences that these characters usually have, Wiggins also proves to have a surprising amount of empathy for Garrison and his situation he ended up. Like Garrison, he found himself turned into a tool because of the talents he possessed. He describes it to Garrison as being akin to "indentured servitude". This gives him a genuine emotional connection between the pair and a sense of understanding. This makes their quick alliance more understandable.

Lamorne Morris gives the character a consistent sense of humor that gives the largely humorless film a charming sense of style. But he's never pushed to the extreme to become annoying but stands out as a likable and snarky ally. There's a level of self-awareness to his dorky performance, proving to be a fun element throughout the film once he's introduced. While the characters aren't the highlight of Bloodshot, Wiggins proves to be the closest thing the story has to a charming role.

Directed by Dave Wilson (VFX Supervisor for Avengers: Age of Ultron) with a script by Eric Heisserer (Arrival) and Jeff Wadlow (Truth or Dare), Bloodshot stars Vin Diesel, Guy Pearce and Toby Kebbell.
