Clint Mansell might have been denied an Oscar nomination for his work on Black Swan, which incorporated too much of Swan Lake to be in the running, but he’s got an even bigger honor his way: providing the score for video game developer BioWare’s space opera trilogy-capping Mass Effect 3. The news comes from an interview Mansell did with The Quietus.
“I’m doing a video game this year actually. Mass Effect 3,” he said, going on to offer some detail on the challenges of scoring for a video game versus a movie. “With something like Mass Effect you’re more like a DJ, with all these elements. You’ve got the holding pattern, then the big explosion where you need the score to kick in. Then you need to take it off on a tangent. You’ve got all these different elements that change depending on what the player does. You have to figure out an overall symphony, but be able to break it down into component parts. You can bring the pain when required.”
It’s always great to see notable creatives like Mansell signing on to participate in high-profile video game releases. The medium catches a lot of flak from all sorts of directions, but there are some great innovations happening in that arena, particularly in the way we relate to an interactive narrative. I think Mansell’s comments about the nature of composing for a game speaks directly to that.
