Did Black Canary’s Scream Make Her…Telepathic?!

Did Black Canary’s Scream Make Her…Telepathic?!

In every installment of “If I Pass This Way Again,” we look at odd comic book plot points that were rarely (sometimes NEVER!) mentioned again after they were first introduced.

Reader M. Bloom suggested this one.

In the past, I have written about one of the strangest comic book fill-in issues of all-time, Justice League of America #84 (by Robert Kanigher, Dick Dillin and Joe Giella). In that issue, Kanigher introduced out of NOWHERE a Batman/Black Canary romance that the incoming writer, Mike Friedrich, had to deal with in a later issue.

However, in that same issue, Kanigher introduced something ELSE, but here, Friedrich just ignored it, as did every other writer.

The Justice League are receiving special Nobel Prizes when they see the fellow who won the Nobel Peace Prize for some new process he developed that could force people to be peaceful to each other (somehow, everyone thinks that this is a great idea and not super creepy).

While in the audience, Black Canary somehow uses her sonic powers to “tune in” to the mind waves of a woman in the audience…

When that woman ends up rescued by Flash later in the issue, but without any memory of what happened after she married the Nobel Peace Prize winner, Flash knows about Black Canary’s powers, so he goes to get here (and, just because he can’t help but be kind of odd, Kanigher also has Iris Allen show up to give her husband some guff along with some weird “only single guys should be in the Justice League” position)….

Canary’s powers work really well…

And so the League stops the madman but then Canary’s telepathy was quickly dropped.

Thanks for the suggestion, M. Bloom! If anyone ELSE has a suggestion for a little-remembered short-lived comic book plot point, drop me a line at brianc@cbr.com and maybe I’ll feature it in a future installment of If I Pass This Way Again!
