Benedict Cumberbatch Not Ascending Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Crimson Peak’

Pacific Rim might not have been the stateside box office bonanza that Legendary was hoping for, but Guillermo del Toro’s sci-fi epic has proved very successful worldwide. The film has made a little less than $385 million worldwide, more than double its original $190 million budget. So, with a win under his belt, del Toro’s moving on to his next Legendary feature, Crimson Peak. However, Benedict Cumberbatch won’t be there to take part.

According to Deadline, the Sherlock and Star Trek Into Darkness star has left the project, although the site notes his departure “is not due to scheduling conflicts.”

Crimson Peak stars Mia Wasikowska as Edith Cushing, an author who realizes her husband has been lying to her about his true nature. Earlier this year, del Toro described the movie as “a Gothic romance, haunted house [movie], in the north of England.

“It’s an adult movie, an R-rated movie, pretty adult. Shockingly different from anything I’ve done in the English language,” he said. “Normally, when I go to do a movie in America for the spectacle and younger audience, for Blade or whatever. This movie’s tone is scary and it’s the first time I get to do a movie more akin to what I do in the Spanish movies.”

Crimson Peak is expected to debut in April 2015.
