Ben Affleck’s Argo Climbs to Top of Dismal Weekend Box Office

By all accounts, this wasn’t a good weekend for the North American box office. Just two weekends ago, the No. 1 release, Paranormal Activity 4, earned almost $30 million, but this weekend the top earner grossed a mere $12 million. On the positive side, though, that film was Argo, which made its way to the top spot after three weeks of release, bringing its total to nearly $61 million.

The news wasn’t great for the weekend’s four new releases: Cloud Atlas, the epic adaptation directed by Tom Tykwer and Lana and Andy Wachowski came in third with $9.4 million, behind Sony’s animated Hotel Transylvania. Open Road Films’ Silent Hill: Revelations 3D tied with Taken 2 for the fifth spot; both earned $8 million.

The two other big releases were the Halloween-themed Paramount comedy Fun Size and Fox’s surfing drama Chasing Mavericks from Fox, which pulled in about $4 million $2.2 million, respectively.

The big question is whether this weekend’s new releases will fare better or worse. The two major releases are Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph and the Seth Rogen/Barbra Streisand comedy The Guilt Trip. On one hand, Hurricane Sandy is poised to do some major damage to the East Coast. On the other, the World Series came to an end last night, which will free up some people unaffected by the storm.
