Despite having seen a great deal of footage from "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" in the trailers, there is still a lot we don't know about the film. In a recent interview with the NY Times, Ben Affleck finally opened up about playing Bruce Wayne, and shined some light on the Dark Knight's motivations for engaging Superman in the fight of the century.

The academy award winning Affleck, (Best Director, "Argo,") had a lot to say about Bruce's mental state in "Batman v Superman," and how that plays into his fears about Superman (Henry Cavill.) Affleck said that Zack Snyder wanted "A Batman who had been Batman for 20 years," that Snyder wanted a "War-weary Batman." Of his version of Bruce Wayne, Affleck said "He's living in this gray zone. He's more broken, not slick. He's filling the hole in his soul with these increasingly morally questionable nighttime excursions - fighting crime as well as by being this playboy."

If Bruce Wayne is filling a hole in his soul with vigilante beat downs, what pain is he trying to mask? Is it the death of a loved one? Is the death of Robin? There is a Robin suit in the Batcave that's covered in yellow graffiti. A lot of fans speculate the Joker killed Robin, which could be why Bruce is in retirement in the film. To this point Henry Cavill said, "There's some real pain buried in there, in the soul of this Batman, yet it's covered with scar tissue. There's some bitterness, which, if dealt with poorly, can go down a bad road."

It's clear that Ben Affleck is playing a version of Bruce Wayne that we have yet to see portrayed in a live-action film. By this time next week, we'll know exactly why he's been in hiding, and why he is willing to go head-to-head with the Son of Krypton.

"Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" opens in theaters next Friday, March 25.
