BOOM! Studios looked to make news Saturday afternoon at Baltimore Comic-Con with two planned announcements for its “We Are BOOM!” panel: that high-profile creators Mark Waid and JG Jones are working on a project together, and that a new Frank Cho series is on the way from the publisher.
BOOM! had previously confirmed that both Waid and Jones were at work on new material at the Los Angeles-based publisher. In a video announcement released this past July, Waid — BOOM’s former editor-in-chief and the writer of past series at the company including “Irredeemable” — disclosed that he was returning to BOOM! for a creator-owned series with “a dear friend of mine, one of the most revered artists in comics and somebody I’ve wanted to work with for a long time but never have.”
CBR has learned that Waid and Jones will co-write the story together, with Jones fully painting the interiors. A title or story details have not yet been announced, but in Waid had described the project In July as “pretty dangerous and not the not the kind of thing that I think any other comic company would touch.” In a video of his own, Jones called it an “edgy little piece that can only be published in one place.” BOOM! Studios has sent CBR two pieces of Jones’ early development art from the project, which is expected for some point next year.
Frank Cho’s BOOM! project is “Skybourne,” which he will be writing and drawing. Cho shared concept art from “Skybourne” last month on his blog, listing it as one of four creator-owned projects the cartoonist currently has in the works. He’s targeting “Skybourne” for a fall 2015 release.
Last month on Facebook, Cho — who has focused largely on work-for-hire material at Marvel in recent years — expressed a desire to focus more on creator-owned comics. “Drawing Marvel stuff but my mind keeps wandering to my creator owned projects,” he wrote.
