A new take on Battlestar Galactica will debut on the Peacock streaming service, with Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail attached as an executive producer. However, Esmail revealed that he first sought the blessing of Ronald D. Moore, who served as showrunner on the Battlestar Galactica reboot that aired on the SyFy channel.

"I spoke to him before I even took on the project to make sure that it's all kosher with him, because the last thing I want to do is step on his toes, and the one thing we both agreed on is that it won't be a reboot of what he did. Which I think we both wanted," Esmail told Collider in a video interview.

Esmail also confirmed that pre-production on the series was still ongoing. "We're still working on the pilot. Look, it's a big universe, it's a big world, I want to respect the Ronald Moore Battlestar."

Both Moore's approach to Battlestar Galactica, as well as the original 1978 television series, follows the last remnants of humanity as they attempt to find the mysterious planet known as Earth. They are constantly chased by the race of machines known as Cylons, who intend to wipe them out. Moore's version was praised for its complexity and is considered to be part of the "Golden Age" of television.

Michael Lesslie and Chad Hamilton will also produce the series, with Lesslie serving as showrunner. A Battlestar Galactica feature film is also in the works, with Simon Kinberg penning the script.

The Peacock version of Battlestar Galactica does not have a release date.
