In "When We First Met", we spotlight the various characters, phrases, objects or events that eventually became notable parts of comic lore, like the first time someone said, "Avengers Assemble!" or the first appearance of Batman's giant penny or the first appearance of Alfred Pennyworth or the first time Spider-Man's face was shown half-Spidey/half-Peter. Stuff like that.

Reader Tom F. wrote in to ask when we first met Wayne Enterprises. Years ago, I did a When We First Met about the history and evolution of Bruce Wayne's wealth itself, but it's interesting that I have never actually featured Wayne Enterprises in this column.

Before we saw Wayne Enterprises, we first saw Wayne Foundation, which began life as the Alfred Foundation following the death of Alfred Pennyworth in Detective Comics #328...

When Alfred turned out to be alive in Detective Comics #356, the Alfred Foundation became the Wayne Foundation...

However, Wayne Enterprises period showed up in 1974's The Brave and the Bold #113 (when Batman is forced out of Gotham City, so Bruce Wayne briefly decides to go back to being "just" Bruce Wayne)...

1979's Batman #307 gets referenced frequently on a lot of sites as the first appearance of Wayne Enterprises, and that doesn't make ANY sense...

Thanks for the suggestion, Tom! If anyone else has a suggestion for a notable comic book first that you would like to see featured, drop me a line at brianc@cbr.com!
