The following contains spoilers for Batman #125, on sale now from DC Comics.

Batman #125 introduces the Dark Knight's Doomsday.

After Batman is framed for murder, a beeping sound is heard deep within the abandoned Batcave. Then, a computer says "Complete" and "Activate" as a capsule rises out of the ground and opens to reveal readers' first look at Failsafe, a new villain created by writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Jorge Jiménez. The antagonist is a robot with a humanoid appearance, red lights and a design similar to Batman, minus the cape.

DC Reveals the First Look at Batman’s Next Catastrophic Villain

Before the new creative team's run on Batman began with the aforementioned issue, Zdarsky stated that Failsafe will be for Batman what Doomsday is for Superman, the monstrous villain that killed the Man of Steel in the "Death of Superman" storyline from the '90s. "When DC approached me to write Batman, I immediately thought about things that could really challenge the character mentally, physically, and in terms of his relationships," Zdarsky said. "Failsafe is his Doomsday."

As of writing though, little is known about what exactly Failsafe is. The issue begins with the same beeping sound being heard by Alfred Pennyworth at a time when the loyal butler and father figure to Bruce Wayne was still alive. Being that Batman's main rule is to never kill anyone and Failsafe originates from within the Batcave, it is possible that the robot was built in order to stop the Caped Crusader should he ever become a murderer, which is currently being broadcast across Gotham following the hero's frame-up.

Batman is known to have contingency plans to bring down heroes, as seen by the "Tower of Babel" arc in JLA by writer Mark Waid and artist Howard Porter, where his plans to defeat allies like Superman and Wonder Woman fall into the wrong hands. The story serves as the inspiration for the animated Justice League: Doom (2012) film directed by Lauren Montgomery, which ends with Batman revealing that the Justice League is his contingency plan for himself. In comics though, the introduction of Failsafe indicates that Batman does have a plan -- or a failsafe -- to deal with himself should the need arise one day.

Batman #125 is written by Zdarsky with interior and main cover art by Jiménez, colors by Tomeu Morey and letters by Clayton Cowles. Variant covers for the issue are contributed to by Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Alex Sinclair, Francesco Mattina, In-Hyuk Lee, Gabrielle Dell'Otto, Simone Di Meo, Jiménez, Jock, Alex Garner and Zdarsky. The issue is now on sale from DC Comics.
