At New York Comic Con, DC Comics debuted a two-page spread from Batman: The Drowned #1, by writer Dan Abnett and artist Philip Tan, one of a series of one-shots tied to Dark Nights: Metal.

Each of the seven issues centers on one of the twisted incarnations of Batman from the Dark Multiverse, recruited by the bat-demon Barbatos to lead the invasion of the DC Universe. While the Batman Who Laughs is the best known of these Dark Knights, having appeared prominently in Metal's "Gotham Resistance" tie-ins and in the three one-shots released to date -- The Red Death, The Murder Machine and The Dawnbreaker -- The Drowned remains a bit of a mystery.

Initially teased with a silhouette that was clearly male, The Drowned was later revealed to be the only female member of the Dark Knights. A malevolent blend of Batman and Aquaman, as indicated by the early use of the Sea King's logo -- she, like the other "evil Batmen," is Bruce Wayne from a parallel, shadowy world. Beyond that, we're left to speculation based on her 16th- or 17th-century clothing and steampunk accessories. In the colorful two-page spread, The Drowned appears to be spewing a tidal wave of purple water.

Batman: The Drowned #1, by Dan Abnett and Philip Tan, goes on sale Oct. 18 from DC Comics.
