The following contains spoilers for Justice League vs. The Legion of Super-Heroes #3, on sale now from DC.

The latest issue of the limited series Justice League vs. The Legion of Super-Heroes features members of the Legion traveling into the future of Gotham City, but not the far-flung future of the 31st century that they're familiar with -- instead, they end up in the Neo-Gotham of Batman Beyond.

The odd temporal event occurs in the middle of the issue as strange bursts of darkness teleport both the heroes of the Justice League and the Legionnaires to various points along the time-space continuum. Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl emerge from a Neo-Gotham subway and immediately find themselves assaulted by one of the Jokerz. After blasting the wannabe villain from his vehicle, they come face-to-face with the Batman of the future, Terry McGinnis.

To avert any misunderstandings, Saturn Girl shows Batman the inside of her mind and explains the team's predicament. Terry responds in amazement, murmuring, "Kind of an honor to meet you Legionnaires of the future," and Cosmic Boy remarks that this futuristic Dark Knight is surprisingly nicer than his 21st-century counterpart, who the Legionnaires met in previous issues of the series.

Aside from Neo-Gotham, other far-flung timelines visited by members of the Legion of Super-Heroes in Issue #3 include Kamandi's dystopian future of animalistic humanoids, and a prehistoric setting full of dinosaurs.

Justice League vs. The Legion of Super-Heroes, written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by Scott Godlewski, has featured two superheroic teams from different eras coming together to investigate the return of the Great Darkness, a deadly enemy which ultimately turned out to be Darkseid and was featured in 1982's "The Great Darkness Saga." Bendis' version of the Great Darkness appears to be a more literal cosmic entity that threatens to rip holes in the fabric of reality, with only the heroes of the DC Universe standing in its way.

"It's been decades since The Great Darkness Saga," Bendis told CBR. "With this reconstructed DC Universe, after all the reboots, we're in a different logic and truth. I thought let's celebrate what the Legion is, put the Great Darkness back into their world and also have it connect to the greater DC Universe because if there's a difference in the Legion between comics now and then, it's that there's an overall universe to contend with, it isn't just [contained within] the book."

Justice League vs. The Legion of Super-Heroes #3, by Brian Michael Bendis, Scott Godlewski, Ryan Cody and Dave Sharpe, is on sale now from DC.
