WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Batman Beyond #37, by Dan Jurgens, Sean Chen, Sean Parsons, Travis Lanham and Chris Sotomayor, on sale now.

The Batman Beyond universe has been going through major changes recently. After fending off the new Scarecrow, Bruce Wayne has been training Matt, Terry McGinnis' younger brother, as the latest Robin, only to realize he can't put another child soldier in the battlefield.

To top it off, the heroes had to fend with the return of the real Joker, a fight they barely escaped from. However, Batman Beyond #37 reveals a few more details about the Clown Prince of Crime, as we discover who's the last member of the famous Jokerz gang, and a lingering question about the original Mistah J, who supposedly died a few issues ago.

Following the debacle with False Face, Bruce's Batcave is in a mess after the villain swapped identities with Terry and died, leaving Bruce's protege roaming Neo Gotham as an amnesiac. However, what really has Bruce and Matt in a panic is that Terry's suit has been stolen by a mysterious new Batwoman, carrying out vigilante duty and making sure Terry isn't missed. From bottom-feeding thugs to the tech-savvy Slamjackers, she's cleaning up the town as Bruce and Matt try to discern her identity. One of her first intriguing confrontations, though, comes against Boffo, the last of Gotham's infamous Jokerz gang.

Boffo holding hostages at Gordon Park in an attempt to free his incarcerated comrades and make Gotham offer up the real Joker, who Boffo thinks is alive since his body isn't in the Gotham morgue. To recap, Joker returned and tried to kill Bruce, but just when he was on the cusp of achieving his goal, he had a heart attack and died. Shockingly enough, an old Harley Quinn stole his body in Batman Beyond#30 as she felt he deserved better. Even though his death was anticlimactic, this paves the way for his return using tech in the future, cloning or even the Lazarus Pit.

Despite this tease of his possible resurrection, for now we have to consider him dead, which makes Boffo -- a trivial character in the gang we've seen since the animated series debuted in 1999 -- a stark, raving lunatic. In fact, he's so emotional and haphazard with his demands, he doesn't even realize Batwoman has rescued his hostages while he rants. As he attempts to shoot the final one at gunpoint, however, Batwoman intervenes one-on-one, giving us a full-look at the redhead. In the melee, Boffo tries to detonate a grenade, but Batwoman throws up a shield using her suit and the hostage is protected in the explosion.

Sadly, it appears Boffo was inside the blast radius, and he seemingly perishes, as onlookers note how stupid his actions were in the heat of the moment.

Even though that Joker is seemingly down for the count, this issue ends with a tease of the original Joker's return.  the original gangster and real deal, could be poised to return someday. Since Harley clearly still harbors some sort of love for him and has his body, it's most likely not a question of if, but when he does come back for revenge.
