Batgirl may expand the DC Extended Cinematic Universe further than some fans might expect, as the upcoming movie could set up a solo film starring another Bird of Prey.

Industry scooper Daniel Richtman's RPK Twitter account reports that the Batgirl film that's due out on HBO Max sometime next year will lead into the Black Canary solo film. RPK's wording may sound somewhat cryptic, but the rumor isn't that difficult to believe, considering a solo Black Canary movie has been confirmed to be in the works at HBO Max, not to mention the fact that both Batgirl and Black Canary are founding members of the Birds of Prey team in the comics.

Rumors of actor Jurnee Smollett reprising her Birds of Prey role of Black Canary for a solo movie began back in August, with Smollett confirming soon after that the project is, in fact, in in the works. The film is being written by Misha Green, who has previously worked with Smollett on the television shows Underground and Lovecraft Country. Though details on the script remain sparse, Green did tease the inclusion of Black Canary's iconic costume from the comics.

While no proper sequel to Birds of Prey is currently planned, both Batgirl and Black Canary are expected to follow up on the events of the 2020 film. Appearances from other members of the team, however, such as Renee Montoya, Huntress and Cassandra Cain have yet to be confirmed for either movie. Yet, Huntress actor Mary Elizabeth Winstead has expressed her eagerness to pick up the crossbow again, saying in a recent interview, "I'm happy I got the chance to do at least one iteration of [Huntress] and if that iteration continues then I'd love to be a part of it, but we'll see what happens."

Batgirl stars Leslie Grace as the titular superhero and her alter ego Barbara Gordon. The film will also feature J.K. Simmons as Barbara's father, Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon, alongside the serial arsonist Firefly, who will reportedly be played by Brendan Fraser. Firefly's frequent association with the first villain Batgirl fought in the comics could also mean Killer Moth will show up in the film as well. Meanwhile, the question of who will take up the cowl of Batgirl's Caped Crusader remains up in the air, as Ben Affleck has been confirmed not to be returning as Batman.

Batgirl will release on HBO Max on a yet-to-be-announced date in 2022.
