Barbarella, the planned television series based on Jean-Claude Forest's 1960s sci-fi comic strip, has found a home with Amazon Studios.

Deadline reports the search has begun for a showrunner for the Gaumont International Television project, which boasts a pilot script by Skyfall writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. It's produced by Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, Only God Forgives), who had been attached to direct.

The comics was famously adapted as a 1968 film starring Jane Fonda as Barbarella, the futuristic space adventurer who travels from planet to planet, where's she's frequently seduced by aliens. In the movie, Barbarella is sent by Earth to find and stop a fiendish weapons inventor.

Barbarella performed poorly in its initial release, but achieved cult status later.
